Authorities warn about a new scam circulating in the Roanoke area

Roanoke County, Virginia – Residents in Roanoke County have been subject to a variety of scams in the past. Some of the most common scams reported include fake IRS calls, tech support scams, and lottery scams. It is important for residents to be aware of these tactics and to never give out personal information or money over the phone or online.

Now, the authorities in Roanoke County are warning citizens about a new scam circulating in the area. According to the Roanoke County Police Department, scammers are allegedly contacting residents of Roanoke County and impersonating Roanoke County sergeants in an attempt to get them to pay a fine for failing to appear in court.

Authorities are once again advising citizens to never give out personal information or money over the phone or online, even if the person who has contacted them sounds quite convincing and may appear to be legitimate. They are reminding citizens that nobody from the court or law enforcement will ever ask you to make a payment online, and those who are required to appear in court will be informed through other methods.

Anyone who has fallen victim to this scam is urged to contact the Emergency Communication Center at 540-562-3265 and file a report.
