Rocky Mount to purchase a 64-acre property for long-term economic development

Rocky Mount, Virginia – On Tuesday, March 14th, the Rocky Mount Council made a significant decision in its efforts to expand its economic development plan. A colossal 64-acre tract of land, situated at the crossroads of Highway 220 and Highway 40, will soon come under the ownership of the city’s Economic Development Authority (EDA). This substantial real estate, which is believed to be one of the largest under-developed properties in Rocky Mount, holds immense potential for the city’s future growth and prosperity.

According to a recent study conducted by Franklin County in 2021, the property in question is considered one of the top three priority sites in the county for future housing. With the council’s decision to move forward with this acquisition, the city of Rocky Mount has taken a significant step towards securing its place as a thriving and vibrant economic hub. The council’s decision to work with its EDA underscores the city’s commitment to its economic growth and the betterment of its residents’ lives.

“A number of people including Town Manager Robert Wood, Town Attorney John Boitnott, Assistant Town Manager Mark Moore, and Cultural and Economic Development Director Daniel Pinard have done a lot of work to make this happen. The Town Council and I are excited about the acquisition of this property,” Mayor Holland Perdue said. “The purchase is an investment in the Town’s future that will be a turning point. Development of the property will not happen quickly. We are going to look at various opportunities for the property with experts and decide how to proceed in order to best position Rocky Mount for the future. It is a long-term project that will benefit the Town for years to come.”

Town officials have announced their intention to collaborate with a team of experienced development experts to devise an optimal plan for utilizing the newly-acquired land to the greatest advantage of the local community. A mixture of residential and commercial purposes are anticipated to be included in the plan, with the ultimate goal of generating long-term benefits for the surrounding area.

“The EDA Board is proud to partner with the Town Council to take this important step to guide the future development of Rocky Mount. There is so much opportunity with this property. I see big things happening in the future for Rocky Mount,” EDA Board Chair Adam Lynch stated.
