Speeding drivers put Roanoke residents at risk

Residential safety is becoming a growing concern in Roanoke, Virginia, after a car crashed into a home on 10th Street Northwest over the weekend. The family whose house was hit said that drivers often go much faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit, which is a big problem for the neighborhood.

Ashley Billy Moore, a resident of 10th Street, explained that drivers regularly speed through the area, putting residents at risk. Mr. Moore lives with his family and never expected a car to come flying into his living room. The incident has left him and his family worried about future accidents and the possibility of being hit by a speeding vehicle.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday. Carley Martinez, who was in the living room minutes before the crash, explained that if she had still been in the room, she may have been seriously injured or worse.

Surveillance footage captured the driver of the vehicle fleeing the scene on foot after crashing into the house. Joseph Word, a long-time resident of the area, explained that speeding became worse after the city repaired the roads in 2019. Mr. Word also expressed his concerns as he often walks his dogs late at night and has witnessed drivers treating the road like a drag strip.

Despite bringing the issue of speeding to the attention of law enforcement, there has been no noticeable change in the situation. The lack of police presence on the road, except when an accident occurs, is causing concern among the neighbors.

Speeding has caused several incidents, including two fatalities in November, leading residents to call for a more proactive approach to the issue. Roanoke Police are currently investigating the incident as a hit-and-run, but the driver has not yet been located, and no one has been charged.

In conclusion, Roanoke residents are becoming increasingly worried about their safety due to speeding drivers in the area. The incident over the weekend, where a car crashed into a home, has only added to these concerns. It is vital that law enforcement take this issue seriously and that residents work together to bring about change. Residents are calling for a more proactive approach to be taken before another accident leads to a more tragic outcome.
