Decades of dedication: Roanoke’s Rescue Mission celebrates 75 years

Roanoke, Virginia – The Rescue Mission of Roanoke is celebrating 75 years of dedicated service to the community from its newly inaugurated welcome center.

Lee Clark, the CEO of The Rescue Mission, underscores the organization’s ongoing commitment to the homeless, hungry, and those requiring medical assistance. “The significance of 75 years cannot be understated,” Clark asserts. “The Rescue Mission, originating from Downtown Roanoke city market, has undergone considerable growth and transformation over the years. This has allowed us to effectively address the requirements of individuals dealing with homelessness, addiction, and poverty.”

The recent expansion has equipped the organization with additional resources to better assist those facing homelessness. “We aim to provide whatever is necessary. Our new space enables us to accommodate those in need, allowing them to find solace and reprieve from life on the streets,” remarks Kevin Berry, Director of Communications.

Berry views their ability to serve the community for an extensive period as a notable achievement. The shelter now possesses approximately 500 beds, ensuring ample provision for those in need.

Enhancements to the center’s ambience include new artistic installations, showcased in three designated areas throughout the building. The artwork, contributed by Russell Chu, was commissioned by the center, with one of the murals portraying the theme of sharing a meal.

“I decided to incorporate additional elements in the mural. A cup of wine has been included as a symbol of the Eucharist,” Chu elucidated.

Chu embarked on the artistic project post-Christmas, with completion achieved by February. The remaining murals were intuitively crafted, guided by the spontaneous strokes of his brush. “I suppose I am now a de facto member of the Roanoke art scene,” Chu humorously observed.

Clark disclosed plans for ongoing celebratory initiatives throughout July. “Our objective for the entire month of July is to commemorate and acknowledge the hard work that has been instrumental in enabling this extraordinary ministry,” Clark concluded.

The Rescue Mission has also teamed up with Skolrood Law Firm and Gentle Shepherd Hospice to match contributions up to $175,000 throughout the month of July.
