Rivers Edge Park lights up with pre-Independence Day festivities

Roanoke, Virginia – The onset of Fourth of July festivities occurred slightly ahead of schedule, commencing on Sunday evening at Rivers Edge Park in Roanoke through an event named Freedom Fest.

Festival attendee Griggs Levan expressed his satisfaction, considering it a splendid augmentation to his summer recess. “I’ve been confined to my quarters throughout the summer with limited activities, however, this outdoor gathering with family friends has indeed been delightful,” said Levan.

The festival constituted an array of amenities, including culinary offerings from food trucks, live performances, complimentary face painting, inflatable bounce houses, among other attractions.

Molly Hagan, the City of Roanoke Parks and Rec Marketing Coordinator, emphasized the necessity of providing economical entertainment options for families. “There’s a vast selection of events to partake in on the Fourth of July. Our intent was to ensure there was a cost-free opportunity for families to partake in, right before the fireworks display,” Hagan elaborated.

Alan Dever, a father and festival attendee, expressed that such community-focused events were not as prevalent in Roanoke as he would prefer. “We are in dire need of more such events. The fact that this festival is free of charge enhances its appeal,” said Dever.

Music enthusiast Brian Boucher, who attended the festival primarily for the live performances, praised the organizers for the scale of the event. “For them to orchestrate an event of this magnitude, inclusive of fireworks and park activities amidst a picturesque landscape, is commendable,” Boucher stated.

For Dever, the concert staged by Five Points Music Sanctuary was a testament to the pivotal role of music in Roanoke’s culture. “We’re a notable music town and have been for a long time. It’s gratifying to witness the growth and evolution of our musical heritage,” Dever noted.

In Levan’s perspective, the Fourth of July and the fireworks serve as a catalyst in unifying the community. “The collective joy and outdoorsy experience were indeed enjoyable,” Levan concluded.
