Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office hosts free shred and drug take back event in April
Roanoke, Virginia – Residents of Roanoke are invited to participate in a community event that promotes both personal security and public health. The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office is hosting a free Community Shred and Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in observance of National Drug Take Back Day. This initiative is a part of ongoing efforts to encourage responsible disposal of sensitive documents and expired or unused medications.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Goodwill parking lot at 2502 Melrose Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24017, located at Melrose Plaza.
Community members are welcome to bring up to two boxes or bags of documents for shredding. These might include old tax records, bank statements, or other personal paperwork that could be used for identity theft if disposed of improperly. The shred event offers a free, secure method for eliminating these documents and protecting residents’ privacy.
In addition to shredding services, the event offers a safe, no-questions-asked option to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired. The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to clean out their medicine cabinets and take part in this Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Take Back initiative.
“This day is also National Drug Take Back Day. We are offering a free and safe way to dispose of those medications that are no longer being used,” the Roanoke Sheriff’s Office emphasized.
Improper disposal of medications, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, poses environmental risks and increases the possibility of drug misuse. Events like this one play a critical role in both safeguarding the community and protecting the environment.
By offering both shredding and drug disposal in one place, the Sheriff’s Office is making it easy for Roanoke residents to take proactive steps toward a safer, more responsible community.
