Roanoke County announces Memorial Day closures and one day delays for trash collection services

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke County residents should prepare for several service changes and office closures during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.

County officials announced that administrative offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. The holiday schedule will also affect trash collection, library operations, transportation services, and some recreation facilities across the county.

According to Roanoke County, trash collection routes will operate on a one-day delay throughout the week of May 25 through May 29.

Under the adjusted schedule, Monday collection routes will move to Tuesday, May 26. Tuesday routes will be serviced on Wednesday, May 27, while Wednesday collections will shift to Thursday, May 28. Thursday routes will then be completed on Friday, May 29.

Officials are encouraging residents to plan ahead and place trash containers out according to the revised collection schedule.

Libraries and County Offices to Close

All Roanoke County Public Library locations will also close on Memorial Day. Officials said libraries throughout the county will remain shut for the entire day on Monday, May 25.

The Roanoke County Circuit Court will also be closed during the holiday.

Several Parks, Recreation and Tourism services will operate under modified schedules as well.

Green Ridge Recreation Center will open early but close at 1 p.m. after operating from 5:30 a.m. during the morning hours. Meanwhile, Brambleton Recreation Center will remain closed for the holiday.

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office will also close Monday.

Despite some closures, county officials noted that other recreation facilities are expected to operate according to their regular schedules throughout the holiday.

Transportation services will also be affected. CORTRAN services will not operate on Memorial Day, meaning riders who rely on the transportation service will need to make alternate arrangements.

However, officials confirmed that the McAfee Shuttle will continue operating on its normal schedule.

County leaders say the adjusted operations are part of the annual Memorial Day observance and are encouraging residents to review schedule changes carefully before the holiday begins.

The temporary closures and delays come as many communities across the region adjust government operations in observance of Memorial Day, which honors military members who lost their lives while serving the United States.
