Federal officials issue alert about rising scam calls targeting residents in Virginia

Charlottesville, Virginia – Federal officials are warning residents across the Western District of Virginia about a troubling rise in scam phone calls that are designed to scare victims into handing over money or personal details.

The alert was issued by First Assistant United States Attorney Robert N. Tracci along with FBI Richmond Division Special Agent in Charge Ian Kaufmann. Authorities say multiple reports have come in from people who received suspicious calls that appeared to come from official government numbers, even though they were not legitimate.

Scam callers using fear and fake identities

According to officials, the callers are using manipulated phone numbers to make it seem like they are contacting victims from trusted government offices. In reality, these numbers are not connected to any real agency. This tactic is meant to lower suspicion and make the threats feel more believable.

During these calls, scammers demand payment and use aggressive language to pressure victims. In some cases, callers have even threatened to “kick down their doors,” creating fear and urgency to push people into acting quickly without thinking.

Authorities are stressing that these calls are completely fraudulent and do not reflect how government agencies operate. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia made it clear that it will never contact individuals to demand money or sensitive information.

Officials also emphasized that federal agencies do not call victims or suspects asking for payment or personal details over the phone. Anyone who receives such a call is urged not to share credit card numbers, prepaid card details, or any personal information.

Instead, residents should report these incidents right away. Officials recommend contacting the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center through IC3.gov to help track and stop these scams.

As these calls continue to surface, authorities are urging the public to stay alert, question unexpected demands, and remember that real government agencies will not pressure individuals in this way.
