Virginia Department of Transportation schedules ramp closure at exit 126 for paving as part of improvement project
Fredericksburg, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the off-ramp from Interstate 95 southbound to Route 1 at exit 126 (Spotsylvania) will be closed overnight from 11 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, until 4 a.m. on Friday, April 11. The temporary closure is required to complete paving operations as part of ongoing improvements to traffic flow in the area.
This closure marks one of the final construction steps for a $15.9 million infrastructure project designed to build a second right-turn lane on the off-ramp and upgrade the southbound section of Route 1 along with Southpoint Parkway. The broader goal of the project is to improve traffic movement and safety near this busy interchange. Full project completion is expected by August 2025.
During the overnight closure, drivers traveling southbound on I-95 who normally exit at Route 1 via exit 126 are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes. Recommended detours include exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg or exit 118 (Thornburg) in Spotsylvania to avoid congestion and delays.
VDOT notes that the paving schedule is weather-dependent. “If inclement weather cancels the planned ramp closure on Thursday evening, it will be rescheduled to occur from 11 p.m. Sunday, April 13, to 4 a.m. Monday, April 14,” the VDOT announcement reads.
Motorists are encouraged to stay alert, follow posted detour signs, and allow extra travel time when passing through the area. Updates and more information about the construction effort near exit 126 can be found on VDOT’s project webpage.
