Virginia secures major economic boost with Micron Technology’s multibillion-dollar expansion project
Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin announced today a historic $2.17 billion investment by Micron Technology, Inc. to expand its operations in the City of Manassas. This substantial investment will not only enhance the production of state-of-the-art DRAM memory products but also create 340 new jobs in the region. The expansion underscores Virginia’s role as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and bolsters the United States’ supply chain security.

A Strategic Investment in the Future
The project will modernize Micron’s Manassas facility, enabling it to meet the growing demand for advanced memory solutions across critical industries, including automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors. Governor Youngkin praised the investment, stating, “Micron Technology’s historic $2.17 billion investment in Manassas reinforces Virginia’s position as a leader in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.” He highlighted Virginia’s skilled workforce, strategic location, and pro-business environment as key factors in securing the project.
Micron’s President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra emphasized the importance of this expansion, noting that “Micron’s investments in domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, supported by the bipartisan CHIPS Act and the incentives offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Manassas, will help drive economic growth and ensure that the U.S. remains at the forefront of technological advancements.”
Collaboration with Federal and Local Partners
The project is backed by federal funding from the CHIPS Act, a bipartisan initiative designed to revitalize the American semiconductor industry. Senator Mark Warner, who authored the CHIPS Act, said, “This expansion strengthens our nation’s semiconductor supply chain, creates good-paying jobs, and reaffirms Virginia’s leadership in the future of American manufacturing.” Senator Tim Kaine also expressed enthusiasm, emphasizing the investment’s significance in bolstering U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.
Local leaders, including Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton and Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger, highlighted the positive impact this investment will have on the community. “Micron’s expansion in Manassas boosts the city’s growing economy and reflects its strong partnership with the nation’s leading memory chip manufacturer,” said Interim Manassas City Manager Doug Keen.
Job Creation and Workforce Development
Micron’s expansion will be supported by the Virginia Talent Accelerator Program, ranked the No. 1 Customized Workforce Training Program in the United States. This program, developed by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) in collaboration with higher education partners, will provide customized recruitment and training services at no cost to Micron. This initiative ensures a seamless integration of new hires into Micron’s culture and operations.
Micron’s operations at 9600 Godwin Dr., Manassas, VA, have been a cornerstone of Virginia’s semiconductor manufacturing sector for 22 years. With this investment, the facility will enhance its production capabilities, meeting the increasing demand for memory and storage solutions while solidifying Virginia’s status as a hub for technological innovation.
A Vision for Economic Growth
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the City of Manassas, and the General Assembly’s Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission (MEI Commission) collaborated to secure the project. Micron is eligible to receive up to $70 million in MEI Commission-approved appropriations, contingent on the investment and job creation milestones being met.
Delegate Michelle Maldonado celebrated the collaboration, stating, “This investment highlights the power of the sort of collaboration between Micron, the City of Manassas, and the Commonwealth that has made Virginia and this district a number one place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Strengthening the Nation’s Semiconductor Industry
Micron’s decision to expand in Manassas comes at a time when the global semiconductor industry faces unprecedented challenges. By increasing domestic production, the U.S. can reduce its reliance on foreign manufacturers and enhance its national security. Chairman Luke Torian remarked, “The CHIPS Act funding, combined with Virginia’s strategic advantages and capable workforce, positions our state at the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing in America.”
Micron’s investment, coupled with Virginia’s strategic initiatives, represents a significant step forward in addressing the nation’s semiconductor needs while creating economic opportunities for the Commonwealth. As the expansion progresses, Virginia continues to solidify its reputation as a leader in advanced manufacturing and innovation.
