Pump track, banked curves, and shaded seating to feature in Wasena Park’s new skatepark design
Roanoke, Virginia – A new chapter is about to unfold at Wasena Park as the city gears up to debut a state-of-the-art skatepark designed for all wheels. After years of community involvement and planning, the City of Roanoke recently signed a $1.6 million contract with Pillar Design Studios to turn the current skate portion of the park into a regional attraction. This project intends to make Wasena Park the hub for skaters and wheeled sports fans of all ages and skill levels with the help of Roanoke, surrounding cities, and individual donors.
The skatepark has been a long time coming. This new facility will be among the biggest joint investments in recreational areas in the region thanks to over $1.07 million donated by the City of Roanoke, extra $200,000 from the City of Salem, $50,000 from the Town of Vinton, and individual donations. The ambitious plans call for a variety of features meant to welcome everyone from beginners learning to skate to experienced athletes developing their skills. Katie Slusher, Roanoke Parks and Recreation Project Manager, spoke with WSLS to explain the improved skatepark is poised to become a “great asset for Roanoke and our neighboring communities,” delivering a unique and adaptable location for the skate community and more.
With its unique form of banked curves and rolling hills, the addition of the pump track—which will let skaters, BMX riders, and scooter users enjoy the excitement of continuous riding—is among the attractions of the design. With this development, Wasena Park will become a regional all-wheel sports attraction drawing visitors not only from Roanoke but also from surrounding towns and cities. With rebuilt walkways to increase access for all guests, the park will also have street-style skate sections, shaded seating sections, and better planting.
Construction is expected to kick off in the winter of 2024, with a grand opening targeted for early 2026. Roanoke Parks & Recreation will have a community meeting on November 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. for those who want to offer ideas or learn more about the project. Reflecting the attitude of community involvement that has driven this project from the first feasibility study back in 2018, the meeting will highlight the design plan and ask for opinions on what the park may offer.

Whether your interests include parks and outdoor activities, biking, or skating, the new Wasena skatepark looks to be an interesting place for everyone.
