Mother, who killed her 2-month-old child more than 3 years ago but did not face any charges, woke up to find her 2-week-old daughter laying unresponsive next to her and told responding EMS workers at the scene “I did it again;” charged!

Court records show that a 21-year-old woman, later identified as Aaliyah, faces charges of felony reckless homicide and neglect of a dependent after the death of her newborn daughter. This tragic incident marks the second time Aaliyah has been implicated in the death of her child under nearly identical circumstances within a span of three years.

The latest incident unfolded on October 9, 2023, when Aaliyah, according to her own emergency call, accidentally suffocated her 2-week-old daughter after falling asleep while breastfeeding. Responding to the distress call, police officers and emergency medical personnel found the infant in a state of cardiac arrest. Despite immediate efforts to save the child, she was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

This case eerily mirrors a similar incident from October 30, 2020, where Aaliyah’s 2-month-old child suffered the same fate. Aaliyah reportedly admitted to first responders at the time that she knew co-sleeping with the newborn was dangerous and wrong, yet charges were not pursued in the 2020 case.

The affidavit for the recent incident highlights Aaliyah’s awareness of the risks associated with co-sleeping, given her previous experience. She said to one of the EMS workers responding at the scene “Oh no, I did it again,”. “Aaliyah was fully aware of the danger of co-sleeping with her infant … as she had a prior born child die while co-sleeping,” police reportedly wrote in the affidavit.

Aside from the charges related to her daughter’s death, court records reveal Aaliyah has multiple criminal cases that are still pending in state circuit courts. Such cases include a January 2021 incident in which she was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman and neglect of a dependent; a November 2021 case in which she is charged with neglect of a dependent and leaving the scene of an accident after crashing into an unattended car; and a February 2023 case charging her with using a computer network or other form of electronic communication for harassment.
