Investigation underway in officer-involved shooting in Roanoke

Roanoke, Virginia – The Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation into the death of a Roanoke man following an officer-involved shooting that occurred on December 19th.

In a significant turn of events, Jeremy Bailey, a 40-year-old man from Roanoke, became embroiled in a fatal incident with law enforcement. Deputies of the United States Marshals Service were attempting to arrest Bailey, identified as a Class 5 felon, on Dunmore Street SW in Roanoke. The situation escalated when Bailey barricaded himself inside his home. During the standoff, a U.S. Marshal fired a shot that struck Bailey.

The injured Bailey was quickly transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries on December 29th, as confirmed by the police.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Virginia State Police recovered a weapon from the scene, which forms a crucial part of their ongoing investigation. The focus is on piecing together the circumstances that led to the shooting and evaluating the actions taken during the incident.

Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the City of Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review. This step is standard procedure in such cases and is crucial for determining the legality and appropriateness of the actions taken by law enforcement during the incident.
