Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office bolsters bike patrols following greenway attack

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that they are intensifying bike patrols along the Lick Run Greenway. This decision comes in the wake of an incident in early July, during which an elderly woman faced a severe assault near the 2.7-mile marker on the mentioned greenway.

Upon discovery, the woman was located within a ravine, necessitating crews to remove surrounding vegetation to ensure her safe retrieval. She was subsequently transported to a hospital due to the seriousness of her injuries.

Despite the passage of over a month since the incident, there have been no charges levied pertaining to the case.

While the sheriff’s office has consistently maintained bike patrols on the greenway, there is a renewed effort to ensure more frequent patrolling. Lieutenant Andrew Palmer commented on the situation, stating, “Obviously as a human being you’re sad anytime anybody is injured or something has happened to somebody. Hence, the sheriff emphasizes on us being present there more often to act as a deterrent.”

It has been disclosed that the sheriff’s office has approximately 15 personnel who are certified for bike patrols, a number of whom serve as School Resource Officers.

Caitlyn Cline, the Public Information Officer for Roanoke Police, added that the victim is currently undergoing recovery. Meanwhile, the investigation is active, with detectives diligently pursuing leads.
