Roanoke’s ‘Bridge the Gap’ project brings greenway access and connectivity to Salem

Roanoke, Virginia – The “Bridge the Gap” project will be finished in the next few months, allowing for increased access to the greenway and a connection between Roanoke and Salem.

The project links Bridge Street, built back in 2012, to Aerial Way and the Salem border, which is a significant milestone for the community. While the one-mile stretch was completed, the project was not without its challenges. The construction of the new bridge with a clear span of 270 feet and several retaining walls presented some topographic issues.

The project team also made sure that the trail kept its 5% slope and could be used by people with disabilities. However, everyone involved in the project agrees that the rewards of the final stretch make it all worthwhile. The greenways, which are separate from the roads, provide a comfortable space for residents to enjoy activities such as biking, running, and teaching children to ride bikes.

The greenways also offer connectivity, which has been lacking in the valley. Renee Powers, the Trails and Greenways Coordinator with Roanoke Parks and Rec, is pleased with the connectivity the greenways provide. City leaders anticipate the project will be finished by late spring or early summer, creating a ten-mile continuous stretch of the Roanoke River Greenway.

The “Bridge the Gap” project is a testament to the city of Roanoke’s commitment to its residents. The greenways give people in the community a safe and comfortable place to enjoy the outdoors away from the dangers of the road.

With this new connection between Roanoke and Salem, community members will have access to even more greenways, leading to increased opportunities for outdoor activities. The project team had to overcome a lot of problems to finish the last mile, but the rewards will be worth it. Soon, the Roanoke River Greenway will be a continuous ten-mile stretch, giving people even more chances to enjoy the outdoors.
