Health officials warn after a deadly disease confirmed in a skunk found in Salem

Salem, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Health has confirmed that a skunk has tested positive for rabies in Salem.

The infected skunk was found in the area of Niblick Drive, and officials are urging individuals who may have had contact with it, whether they or their animals, to come forward and contact Salem Animal Control or the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts Environmental Health Division. The rabid skunk was collected by Salem Animal Control on March 4.

Rabies is a deadly disease that affects the nervous system and is caused by a virus. It is preventable in domestic animals through vaccinations, but it is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated. Exposure to rabies can occur when saliva or central nervous system tissue from a potentially rabid animal enters a fresh wound, or when rabid tissue enters a mucous membrane via the eye, mouth, or nose. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you have been exposed to rabies.

According to Virginia state law, pet owners must maintain current rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats that are four months or older. The Code of Virginia §3.2-6521 requires pet owners to adhere to this regulation. Citizens are advised not to approach or touch any wild or stray animals and should report any abnormal animal behavior to their local animal control dispatcher. All animal bites and rabies exposures (from wild and domestic animals) must be reported to the RCAHD Environmental Health Division at 540-204-9764.

It is critical to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your pets from rabies. In addition to maintaining current rabies vaccinations for your pets, it is important to avoid contact with wild animals and to report any abnormal animal behavior to your local animal control authorities. If you suspect that you or your pet has been exposed to rabies, seek medical attention immediately.
