Health officials issue rabies warning after skunk tests positive in Botetourt County

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts have issued a public advisory following the confirmation of a rabies case in a skunk found in Botetourt County.

The said skunk was located on Cook Avenue in Cloverdale, a region situated in the southern part of the county. Botetourt County Animal Control officials apprehended the animal on Friday, Aug. 11.

Rabies is a viral ailment that targets the central nervous system. It is typically transmitted through bites from infected animals. Notably, there are vaccine treatments available that shield domesticated animals from this disease. Nonetheless, if rabies goes untreated, it poses fatal risks to both humans and animals.

It’s imperative for the public to be aware that the law mandates pet owners to ensure their dogs and cats aged four months and above receive regular rabies vaccinations.

For the community’s safety and to curtail the potential spread of rabies, residents are advised to:

  • Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals.
  • Ascertain that your pets’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.
  • Notify authorities about any animals exhibiting unusual behavior.
  • In instances where potential exposure to rabies is suspected, individuals should promptly reach out to their medical practitioner and the local health department. Likewise, should pets come into contact with a possibly rabid animal, owners should consult their veterinarian and report to local animal control.

Any individual with knowledge regarding contact between a person or another animal and the aforementioned rabid skunk is urged to connect with either the Roanoke City Alleghany Highlands District or the Botetourt County Animal Control.
