Drivers advised to prepare for lane closures as Route 220 and Route 419 undergo major upgrades

Roanoke, Virginia – A significant highway improvement project is now underway to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion at the Route 220 and Route 419 interchange. The project, which includes a diverging diamond interchange and various signal upgrades, aims to improve efficiency and safety for drivers traveling through this busy corridor.

Upgrades Designed to Improve Traffic Flow

The Route 220 and Route 419 interchange will be reconfigured with a diverging diamond design, a modern traffic solution known for improving safety and reducing congestion. Additionally, signal modifications will be implemented at multiple intersections along both roads to optimize traffic movement.

Intersections on Route 220 that will see changes include Valley Avenue/Southern Hills Drive, Crossbow Circle/Pheasant Ridge Road, Buck Mountain Road/Stable Road, and Indian Grave Road/Clearbrook Village Lane. On Route 419, modifications will take place at Ogden Road, Elm View Road, and South Peak Boulevard. These improvements are expected to take place in phases throughout the project’s duration, with full completion anticipated by fall 2028.

Temporary Lane Closures Set to Begin

As part of the construction, two lane closures are scheduled to take place on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 7 p.m. to allow for utility work. The right lane of westbound Route 419 will be closed from Tanglewood Mall through the intersection of Route 220. Additionally, the center left-turn lane of the northbound Route 220 exit ramp onto westbound Route 419 will also be closed during this phase of construction.

Motorists are advised to be aware of the ongoing roadwork, expect potential delays, and follow posted detour signs and lane closure warnings. The project aims to create a more efficient and safer roadway system for commuters and businesses in the region.
