Traffic delays expected next week on I-495 as crews begin sign and barrier installation
Fairfax, Virginia – Drivers should prepare for upcoming lane closures on Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) as Virginia’s 495 NEXT project crews begin sign and barrier installations. These closures will affect northbound and southbound traffic between Cabin John Parkway and the American Legion Bridge from Monday, February 17, through Sunday, February 23.
The work includes the installation of temporary signs, barriers, and preparatory efforts for overhead sign structures. Travelers are advised to anticipate delays and exercise caution when driving through the affected areas.
Daytime and Nighttime Lane Closures
Work will take place during both daytime and nighttime hours, with the following closure schedule:
Daytime Closures
- Monday, February 17, and Tuesday, February 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., mobile shoulder closures will be in effect on both northbound and southbound lanes.
- Thursday, February 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the right lane of southbound I-495 will be closed.
Nighttime Closures
- Wednesday, February 19, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the right lane of southbound I-495 will be closed.
- Thursday, February 20, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the left lane of southbound I-495 will be closed.
- Sunday, February 23, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the left lane of northbound I-495 will be closed.
