January casino revenue in Virginia tops $72 million as industry growth continues
Bristol, Virginia – The Virginia Lottery has released its casino gaming report for January 2025, highlighting revenue figures from the state’s three operating casinos: Hard Rock Bristol, Rivers Casino Portsmouth, and Caesars Virginia.
Gaming Revenue and Tax Contributions
During January, Virginia’s casinos collectively generated $72.3 million in adjusted gaming revenue (AGR), which represents total wagers minus winnings paid out to players. As per state law, a portion of this revenue is taxed, amounting to $13.0 million in tax contributions for the month.
Slot machines were the primary source of revenue, accounting for $53.8 million, while table games brought in an additional $18.5 million across all three casinos.
Breakdown of gaming revenue for each casino:
- Hard Rock Bristol reported $18.5 million in AGR, with $15.1 million from slots and $3.3 million from table games.
- Rivers Casino Portsmouth generated $25.2 million in AGR, with $17.2 million from slots and $8.0 million from table games.
- Caesars Virginia led the month with $28.5 million in AGR, including $21.3 million from slots and $7.1 million from table games.
Allocation of Casino Taxes
Virginia law dictates that casino taxes be distributed among several funds, including the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, the Family and Children’s Trust Fund, and direct contributions to host cities. For the Hard Rock Bristol casino, the host city’s share is allocated to the Regional Improvement Commission (RIC).
Total tax revenue collected from each casino:
- Hard Rock Bristol: $3.33 million in total tax revenue, with $1.11 million allocated to the host city.
- Rivers Casino Portsmouth: $4.54 million in total tax revenue, with $1.51 million allocated to the host city.
- Caesars Virginia: $5.14 million in total tax revenue, with $1.71 million allocated to the host city.
The Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund received $104,176, while the Family and Children’s Trust Fund was allocated $26,044. The remaining $8.55 million was placed in the Gaming Proceeds Fund, which supports various state initiatives.
