Federal prosecutors pursue charges against 67-year-old Roanoke man in violent bank robbery spree
Roanoke, Virginia – Following an indictment on several charges linked to a string of bank robberies, 67-year-old man made his first appearance in federal court last week in Roanoke. The accused, Michael Anthony McCoy, is accused of conspiring to commit bank robbery, actual bank robbery involving the use of a dangerous weapon, and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime.
Last month, the Roanoke federal grand jury issued the indictment describing McCoy’s alleged participation in two Truist Bank robbery incidents. The charges state that the events happened late October of last year and included an intentional plan combining a threatening note with the use of a firearm.
Legal records show McCoy instructed Dawn Davis, an accomplice, to create a threatening note for use in the first robbery at the Truist Bank on NW Melrose Avenue in Roanoke. According to reports, McCoy brandished a gun at another after delivering the letter to one bank teller, therefore escalating the severity of the robbery. From this first theft, the pair apparently fled with about $6,485.
Two days later, McCoy hit another Truist Bank facility and stole about $6,000, starting the crime spree. Although they are part of the current federal prosecution, the exact specifics of this second crime have not been as fully described in public sources.
Mentioned as McCoy’s accomplice, Dawn Davis has previously admitted guilt to related counts, suggesting likely collaboration with federal officials in the case against McCoy.

Late last year McCoy was arrested in Newport News on separate charges. Since then he has been kept in detention. His court appearance starts the legal process in a case that has attracted attention because of the age of the defendant and the brutal character of the offenses.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is actively involved in the investigation, signaling the seriousness of the offenses. The use of a firearm in committing these robberies adds a significant layer of concern, as it poses a direct threat to public safety and elevates the charges McCoy faces.
Since the crimes took place, the community has been on alert; local police have been more visible at local banks. The case is still developing as federal authorities put together the events surrounding the robbery and McCoy’s subsequent legal actions.
