City of Roanoke secures funding to transform Amtrak Station area into a modern transit hub

Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke has been selected as one of 45 recipients of a prestigious grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Build America Bureau through its Innovative Finance and Asset Concession Grant Program (IFACGP). This three-year, $50 million program supports public entities in exploring creative financing and delivery options for transit-oriented projects involving public assets.

Roanoke will use the grant funding to evaluate city-owned properties within a half-mile radius of the Amtrak Station. The initiative aims to develop a strategic plan to transform the area into a vibrant and accessible transit hub, fostering growth and connectivity in the community. The funding will enable the city to assess opportunities for innovative transit development that maximizes the station’s potential as a central node for transportation and commerce.

Marc Nelson, Roanoke’s Director of Economic Development, expressed optimism about the project’s impact: “We believe that this program has the potential to be a game-changer for Roanoke, and we are committed to working with the U.S. Department of Transportation to make the most of this opportunity.”

The IFACGP is designed to empower local, regional, and state public entities by providing resources to enhance transit-oriented development and optimize public assets. Roanoke’s inclusion in this program underscores the city’s dedication to progressive urban planning and sustainable development.
