City of Roanoke joins state initiative to strengthen Main Street communities and create economic opportunities
Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke has been selected to participate in the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) 2025-26 Mobilizing Main Street Program. This two-year initiative is designed to provide focused support for Exploring Main Street (EMS) communities as they work toward achieving Advancing Virginia Main Street (VMS) designation and Main Street America accreditation.
The program aims to strengthen organizational development and create economic opportunities for participating communities. “The targeted support and expertise offered by DHCD and Main Street America will allow us to accelerate revitalization efforts in our designated Main Street communities,” said Marc Nelson, Roanoke’s Director of Economic Development.
A Collaborative Vision for Growth
Roanoke will collaborate with DHCD to implement strategies that bolster community development and economic progress. The city’s five designated Main Street areas align with the Gainsboro Community Hub Concept Plan and the Emerging Neighborhood Center’s Vision Report, which prioritize sustainable growth and improved quality of life.
The five Main Street communities include:
- Gainsboro Road
- 11th Street NW
- Melrose Avenue at 24th Street
- West End
- 9th Street SE
These neighborhoods have been identified as focal points for revitalization efforts, aiming to foster economic growth and community engagement.
