Roanoke’s annual leaf collection program wraps up on December 19

Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke’s annual bagged leaf collection is set to conclude on Thursday, December 19. Residents are urged to ensure their leaves are bagged and placed curbside in biodegradable paper bags. The city will not collect leaves that are in plastic bags or left loose.

This environmentally focused program gives residents an opportunity to dispose of leaves while supporting soil sustainability. Once collected, the bags are transported to a designated property on Old Mountain Road. Through an ongoing agreement with Rockydale Quarries, the leaves will naturally decompose over time, creating new topsoil to benefit the environment.

However, residents should take note that after December 19, any uncollected leaves—regardless of whether they are placed in biodegradable bags—will be sent to the landfill.

To avoid unnecessary waste, residents are encouraged to act before the deadline. For more information on collection guidelines, visit the City of Roanoke’s official website or contact local waste management services.
