City of Roanoke and Roanoke County announce adjusted schedules during Christmas and New Year holidays

Roanoke, Virginia – Residents of Roanoke City and Roanoke County are advised of upcoming closures and schedule adjustments for administrative offices, solid waste collection, and public facilities during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Both entities have released detailed plans to ensure the community is well-informed and services remain as seamless as possible during this festive season.

Roanoke City Holiday Closures and Trash Collection Schedule

Roanoke City administrative offices will close on Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25 to observe the Christmas holiday. For solid waste collection services, adjustments have been made as follows:

  • Monday routes – No change; collection will occur as usual.
  • Tuesday routes – Collection will remain on schedule.
  • Wednesday routes – Rescheduled to Thursday, December 26.
  • Thursday routes – Rescheduled to Friday, December 27.

Residents needing assistance with solid waste services are encouraged to contact the Solid Waste Department at (540) 853-2000, Option 1.

Roanoke County Administrative Office Closures and Adjustments

Roanoke County offices will close on the same days for Christmas: Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25. Additionally, offices will observe New Year’s Day with closures on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Adjusted Trash Collection Schedules

Residents are urged to place their trash containers on the designated collection days and leave them out until emptied. The adjusted schedules for the Christmas and New Year weeks are as follows:

Christmas Week (December 23–27, 2024):

  • Monday and Tuesday routes – Collected Monday, December 23.
  • Wednesday routes – Collected Thursday, December 26.
  • Thursday routes – Collected Friday, December 27.

New Year’s Week (December 30–January 3, 2025):

  • Monday and Tuesday routes – Collected on schedule.
  • Wednesday routes – Collected Thursday, January 2.
  • Thursday routes – Collected Friday, January 3.

Facility and Service Closures

Several parks, recreation, and tourism facilities, as well as libraries, will have altered schedules during the holidays.

Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Facilities

  • December 24, 2024 (Christmas Eve):
    • Green Ridge Recreation Center: Early closure from 5:30 AM to 2 PM.
    • Brambleton Recreation Center: Closed.
    • Explore Park Visitor Center: Closed.
    • Public Service Center: Closed.
  • December 25, 2024 (Christmas Day):
    • All recreation facilities will remain closed.
  • December 31, 2024 (New Year’s Eve):
    • Green Ridge Recreation Center: Early closure from 5:30 AM to 2 PM.
    • Brambleton Recreation Center: Open from 8 AM to 6:30 PM.
    • Public Service Center: Open from 8 AM to 5 PM.
    • Explore Park Visitor Center: Closed.
  • January 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day):
    • All recreation facilities will remain closed.

Roanoke County Public Libraries

Library hours will also be adjusted during the holidays:

  • December 23, 2024: Libraries will close early at 5 PM.
  • December 24–25, 2024: Libraries will remain closed all day.
  • December 31, 2024: Early closure at 5 PM.
  • January 1, 2025: Libraries will be closed all day.

CORTRAN Transportation Service

CORTRAN services will observe the following schedule:

  • December 25 (Christmas Day): No service available.
  • December 31 (New Year’s Eve): Normal operating hours.
  • January 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day): No service available.

Roanoke County Clerk of Circuit Court

The Clerk’s office will close on the following days:

  • December 24–25, 2024: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  • December 26, 2024: Extra State Holiday.
  • December 31, 2024–January 1, 2025: New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid disruptions during the holidays. The adjustments to trash collection, public service hours, and recreational facilities aim to balance essential services with time for employees to celebrate the holidays.
