Roanoke resident hits $1 million jackpot with 20X the Money Virginia Lottery scratcher

Roanoke, Virginia – Nicholas Foxx of Roanoke got the surprise of a lifetime while visiting family in Altavista. During his visit, he stopped by A1 Mini Mart on Main Street to pick up an energy drink and some Virginia Lottery scratcher tickets. Little did he know that one of those tickets, a 20X the Money scratcher, would make him a millionaire.

“I thought I was reading it wrong!” Foxx said when he realized he had won the top prize of $1 million. “You don’t know anyone who’s hit the Lottery for that amount of money!”

Foxx, who works as a crane operator, had the option of receiving the full $1 million prize in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash payout of $625,000 before taxes. He opted for the one-time cash option.

A Win for Both the Winner and the Community

The A1 Mini Mart, where Foxx bought the winning ticket, will also benefit from his lucky purchase. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the $1 million winning ticket.

This marks the fourth top prize claimed in the 20X the Money game, which still has two top prizes remaining. The game offers prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million, with odds of winning the top prize at 1 in 1,958,400. The chances of winning any prize in the game are 1 in 3.65.

Lottery Funds Benefit Virginia Education

In addition to awarding life-changing prizes, all Virginia Lottery profits go toward supporting K-12 education in the state. The ticket Foxx bought contributed to Campbell County, which received over $8 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2024, the Virginia Lottery raised more than $934 million for education, covering roughly 10 percent of the state’s total K-12 budget.
