Roanoke’s Wasena Bridge awaits overdue renovation; new timeline announced

Roanoke, Virginia – Residents of Roanoke persist in using the Wasena Bridge in the Southwest region, notwithstanding the previously announced replacement plan in 2020. This bridge, providing a route to Main Street, has surpassed its projected lifespan, yet remains operational.

A recent report by WDBJ 7 provides further insight into the Wasena Bridge project, indicating a commencement date now set for 2024. Originally, the replacement efforts were scheduled for the previous spring. However, the city of Roanoke awaited authorization from Norfolk and Southern, given the presence of five railroad tracks beneath the bridge. The completion of this project is anticipated to enhance accessibility.

A detailed announcement regarding the project is slated for later this month. The entire undertaking is projected to span two years. Notably, B&D Comics, a longstanding establishment situated on Elm Avenue adjacent to the bridge, occupied a log cabin for three decades. The proprietor, Terry Baucom, expressed prior awareness of an eventual relocation necessity. Since last March, the enterprise has settled at 2937 Brambleton Avenue and has experienced prosperity in its new venue.
