Roanoke officials urge caution after bear sighting at Mill Mountain Park

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke Park and Recreations Department (PLAY Roanoke) and the City of Roanoke have issued a warning to park visitors concerning recent bear sightings in Mill Mountain Park on July 13.

According to park officials, the bear was observed in close proximity to the Pavilion area and has been rummaging through trash cans. As a precautionary measure, visitors are advised against depositing trash in open cans within the park. Instead, they are encouraged to dispose of trash containing food waste outside the park premises.

In the event of a bear encounter, the United States Department of Agriculture provides the following guidelines:

  1. Do not run.
  2. Maintain a calm demeanor.
  3. Gather in a group and ensure the safety of small children.
  4. Maintain eye contact with the bear while slowly backing away, speaking in a composed and reassuring manner to establish your human presence.
  5. If the bear continues to approach, attempt to intimidate it by assuming a large and assertive stance. Extend your arms above your head and generate loud noises.
  6. Carry bear spray and familiarize yourself with its proper usage. Bear spray is readily available at various outdoor retail establishments.

These precautions are essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of both visitors and wildlife in Mill Mountain Park.
