Doctors advise parents to schedule vaccinations and sports physicals ahead of the next school year

Roanoke, Virginia – As the current school year approaches its end, medical professionals emphasize the importance of early planning for the upcoming school year, particularly concerning vaccinations and sports physicals.

Dr. Christopher Pierce, Chair of Pediatrics at Carilion Children’s, encourages parents to schedule their children’s wellness checkups earlier rather than later, with sports physicals available beginning May 1 for the next academic year.

He notes that doctors’ offices and clinics often become overwhelmed during the final weeks of summer as families scramble to schedule appointments before school resumes.

Dr. Pierce explains that current requirements for children entering kindergarten or public pre-k programs mandate vaccinations for those aged four to five years old. Furthermore, vaccines are recommended for children aged eleven, typically those entering sixth grade.

As students prepare to transition to middle and high school, it’s an opportune time to ensure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations, including any necessary follow-up doses.

Emphasizing the critical role vaccines play in maintaining children’s health and well-being, Dr. Pierce warns of occasional outbreaks, such as measles, occurring in the United States. He also highlights the adverse impact of the pandemic on vaccination rates.

Early planning and scheduling of wellness checkups and vaccinations can contribute to a healthier, safer academic year for all students.
