Organizers are working on the third annual Try Y’s Pi event. Tickets are $28 and are already going fast.

The Super Bowl is over, and so is the Souper Bowl Challenge, which is held every year by the YMCA at Virginia Tech. As in years past, the challenge included voting for the best soup. Mushroom and Sherried Salmon from Blue Ridge Mountain Catering got 44% of the votes, making it the winner.

The event was a big success, and even though more tickets were added, all of them were sold out. Blue Ridge Mountain Catering wasn’t the only restaurant in Blacksburg to make a special soup for the event. Next Door Bake Shop made Thai Coconut Soup, Our Daily Bread made White Chicken Chili, Zeppoli’s made Corn Chowder, and Souper Hero made Chicken Noodle Soup (Ham & Cauliflower).

Chef Jim Parker said in a YMCA news release about the event, “I’d like to thank everyone for liking my soup and coming to the event.” “I’m glad I won the challenge, but I’m even happier that I could help the Y’s Meals on Main program. Blue Ridge Mountain Catering and a lot of hard-working volunteers have been working on this program for years to make sure that kids don’t go hungry. I know that your work has made a big difference in our community, so please keep helping and eat more soup!”

The money raised by the Souper Bowl Challenge helps pay for Senior Connections and other YMCA programs, as well as Meals on Main.

The director of community engagement at the Y, Laureen Blakemore, said, “We were thrilled that the five local restaurants and the community were so excited about this event.”

The third annual Try Y’s Pi, another popular event, is currently being planned. Like the Souper Bowl Challenge, people who buy tickets get a taste of food from restaurants in the Blacksburg area, and the money raised goes to the Y’s community programs. Blacksburg Bagels, Halwa Bakery, Next Door Bake Shop, and Our Daily Bread are among the bakeries that will be taking part in 2023.

Samplers can be picked up at the YMCA Thrift Shop at 1000 N. Main St. in Blacksburg between 5 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14 (Pi Day).
