Upcoming events in Southwest Virginia offer something for everyone

“Revelations” by Alvin Ailey will be performed on both nights. Since it was made in 1960, “Revelations” has been seen by more people around the world than any other modern dance work. Its strong stories and soul-stirring music move audiences, and its themes of determination, hope, and transcendence are timeless.

“Revelations” was inspired by Ailey’s memories of growing up in the south and going to church at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas. It honors the rich cultural history of African Americans and looks at the range of human emotions.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is putting on these shows, which are co-sponsored by the Black Cultural Center at Virginia Tech and partly paid for by gifts from Dr. Mark and Connie Froggatt, Ms. Ann Goette, and Dr. James M. Shuler and Ms. Margaret F. Shuler.

As a college student, making an extra buck now and then was very important. I started as a part-time reporter since I was 19 yo, and I couldn’t believe it might become a long-time career. I'm happy to be part of the Virginian Tribune's team.
