Authorities looking for a suspect in connection with a shooting on the UVA campus that resulted in fatalities

On Monday morning, the University of Virginia was placed under lockdown and classes were canceled as police sought a student wanted in connection with a shooting that took place the night before and resulted in fatalities. In a message to the local community, the president of the university announced that three people had been murdered and two others injured in the shooting that took place on Sunday evening.

The suspect, identified as UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., is still at large.

In the late hours of Sunday night, a report of shots being fired on campus prompted the officials to issue a warning, instructing students and staff members to take shelter in place. An alert about an “active attacker firearm” was issued by the university’s emergency management team on Twitter at 10:42 p.m.

“There has been a shooting on Culbreth Road, and the suspect is at large and considered armed and dangerous,” UVA President Jim Ryan said in a tweet, asking the university community to “please shelter in place.”

A notice was also put online by the UVA Police Department stating that numerous law enforcement agencies were looking for a suspect who was described as “armed and dangerous.” UVAPD says the suspect may be driving a black SUV with the Virginia tag TWX3580.
