House and Senate Education Committees gathered for an education summit in western Virginia
ROANOKE, Va. – On Friday afternoon, members of the House and Senate Education Committees gathered in western Virginia to wrap up a summit that had taken place over the previous two days.
On Thursday, the legislative gathering took place at Radford University, and on Friday, it was held at the Hotel Roanoke.
The group talked about a wide range of modern issues, from how to evaluate students to how to keep free speech safe on college campuses.
And one of the very last topics that they addressed was the price of obtaining a higher education.
“College affordability, for me, and for us at Virginia State University, is probably the most important issue that we have, trying to make sure that we educate young people and give them an opportunity to chase their dreams,” said Virginia State University President Dr. Makola Abdullah.
According to Abdullah, the state’s publicly funded schools and universities are all concerned about keeping tuition low.
In addition, he said that the fact that legislators were discussing the issue during their education conference gave him cause for optimism.
