Roadwork on Route 253 in Rockingham County to impact traffic for three months

Staunton, Virginia – Drivers traveling along Route 253 (Port Republic Road) in Rockingham County should prepare for temporary changes as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) begins bridge maintenance on the North River bridge. Starting Monday, March 3, a temporary traffic signal will be installed, and vehicle-width restrictions will be enforced for approximately three months in the village of Port Republic.

Restrictions for Oversized Vehicles

During the maintenance period, vehicles over 11 feet in width will not be permitted to cross the North River bridge. Drivers of oversized vehicles must use alternate routes to navigate the area. Signs posted along Route 253, Route 276 (Cross Keys Road), Route 340 (East Side Highway), and Route 825 (South River Road) will alert motorists about the width restriction and direct them to alternative paths.

Temporary Traffic Signal for Smaller Vehicles

Vehicles under 11 feet in width will still be able to use the bridge, but they will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal operating around the clock. This signal will remain in place for the entire duration of the project, helping to manage the flow of traffic while crews complete necessary bridge maintenance.

Project Timeline and Potential Delays

The maintenance work is expected to be completed by Friday, May 23, although this schedule is subject to weather conditions. Drivers should anticipate potential delays in the area and plan for extra travel time.

For up-to-date traffic alerts and traveler information, motorists are encouraged to call 511 or visit VDOT’s traffic information website.
