Husband held the head of his wife, with whom he had been married for over 4 decades, in a utility sink filled with water until she drowned, then claimed she killed herself; sentenced
Illinois – In a chilling domestic incident that has captured the attention of Illinois, a 68-year-old man, identified as M. Vorrath, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of his 60-year-old wife. After more than four decades of marriage, Vorrath was convicted of drowning his wife in a basement utility sink, a crime that has devastated their family and community.
The tragic event occurred on November 19, 2019, in the couple’s home. Vorrath initially misled the police by claiming that his wife had taken her own life. According to his account to the police, he attempted to save her by performing CPR for 15 minutes before calling 911. However, when authorities arrived at approximately 1 p.m. that day, they discovered the woman unresponsive with her head submerged in the utility sink.
An autopsy later revealed the truth: The woman’s death was not a suicide but a murder by drowning. The examination showed significant injuries consistent with someone forcefully holding her underwater. This chilling evidence contradicted Vorrath’s claims and pointed to a deliberate act of murder.
The journey to justice was fraught with challenges, including two mistrials. It wasn’t until the third jury trial, which concluded on August 14, that Vorrath was found guilty of first-degree murder. During the sentencing hearing, the attorney’s office emphasized the brutality of the crime, describing it as a “hands-on crime” where Vorrath “submerged Mrs. Vorrath in a sink, held her there, and watched her life leave her body.”
Assistant State’s Attorney D. Gast highlighted the severity and personal nature of the murder in his plea for a stringent sentence, which ultimately led to Vorrath being ordered to serve 100% of a 45-year sentence. Under the conditions of his sentence, he will not be eligible for parole and is expected to spend the remainder of his life in prison.
The murder has deeply affected the Vorrath family, with the couple’s children expressing their profound loss and ongoing trauma in court. They spoke of their mother as “the light in their lives” and lamented the additional loss of their father due to his actions and refusal to admit guilt. The family’s suffering extended beyond their immediate grief, as they faced depression, nightmares, and the strain of a prolonged judicial process.
The crime not only ended a life but also left indelible marks on the family and tarnished the Vorrath name, causing division among relatives and a community struggling to understand the brutal nature of the woman’s death.
The victim’s life was commemorated in an obituary that highlighted her dedication to helping others. She worked with developmentally and physically challenged individuals and was remembered for her kindness and selflessness. Her interests included swimming, reading, camping, and hiking, but most of all, she cherished time spent with her kids and grandchildren.
As the community and the Vorrath family continue to process this tragedy, the case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of justice in bringing some measure of peace to those affected.
