Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office fires deputy following allegations of misconduct and indictment

The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office has fired one of its deputies, Jonathan Hildalgo, following several allegations of misconduct at the Roanoke Detention Center.

Sheriff Hash announced that a joint investigation was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, the Roanoke City Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, and the Virginia State Police after potential misconduct was identified by Deputy Hildalgo. He joined the sheriff’s office in July 2019, but was suspended without pay since January 2023.

On Monday, March 6, Hildalgo was indicted by a grand jury on three charges, including attempting to deliver narcotics to a prisoner, delivering narcotics to a prisoner, and two counts of bribery in a correctional facility.

The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office takes these allegations seriously and has taken immediate action to terminate Hildalgo’s employment. The investigation into his alleged misconduct will continue, and the Sheriff’s Office will release more information as it becomes available.

It is vital to hold law enforcement officials accountable for their actions, especially when it involves unethical or illegal behavior. The public deserves to have trust and confidence in those who have been sworn to serve and protect them.
