Roanoke announces changes to city operations ahead of New Year celebrations

Roanoke, Virginia – As the city prepares to ring in the New Year, officials have announced that City offices will be closed on Thursday, January 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Despite the closure of city offices, residents should note that essential collection services will continue with slight adjustments. Trash, A-week recycling, bulk, brush, and bagged leaf pickups scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will proceed on their regular days without interruption. However, “Thursday routes [will be] collected on Friday, January 2,” meaning residents whose regular collection falls on Thursday should plan accordingly to have their items out by Friday morning.

The City of Roanoke encourages everyone to stay informed and prepared during the holiday week. While administrative offices will be closed on New Year’s Day, some public services will remain partially available. Specifically, Roanoke Public Libraries will still be open on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, offering community members a chance to grab books, movies, or other resources ahead of the holiday.

Residents are urged to share the updated schedule with neighbors and friends to ensure no one misses their collection day. The city wishes everyone a safe and joyful start to the New Year.
