VDOT warns of continuous lane closures on I-81 near Smyth County due to paving work
Bristol, Virginia – Drivers traveling through Smyth County next week should prepare for delays, as a major paving operation is scheduled along Interstate 81 southbound near exit 39 in the Seven Mile Ford area.
Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, October 13, crews will begin around-the-clock paving work that will last until the morning of Wednesday, October 15. Throughout the duration of the project, motorists should expect continuous day and nighttime lane closures as crews alternate between the right and left lanes.
Traffic will be guided by signs and electronic message boards. The Virginia Department of Transportation is urging drivers to stay alert for sudden lane shifts and reduced speeds in the construction zone.
Local drivers are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes during the operation to avoid being caught in congestion or delays caused by slowed or stopped traffic. While inconvenience is expected, VDOT emphasizes that the goal is to improve driving conditions and ensure long-term roadway safety.
The project is expected to wrap up by October 15, weather permitting.
