Roanoke County invites artists of all ages to inspire new library murals
Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke County Public Library (RCPL), in partnership with county staff, is launching a community-wide art contest that will give local artists the chance to see their creative ideas transformed into public murals at three library locations.
The contest is open for one month and invites residents from across Roanoke County to submit original artwork. Winning designs will inspire vibrant murals created by professional muralists, bringing color, creativity, and community spirit to public spaces.
A Creative Opportunity for Every Age Group
The contest is divided into three categories, each offering a unique opportunity to make a lasting mark on the community:
Kids (12 and under)
Young artists can submit designs for a painted storm drain mural at the Vinton Library. A local professional muralist will bring the winning concept to life. Artwork should focus on nature, animals, or protecting waterways from stormwater pollution, turning a simple storm drain into “a powerful reminder of how we all play a part in keeping our environment clean and green.”
Teens (ages 13–17)
Teens can also take part by submitting artwork that will inspire another storm drain mural at the South County Library. This mural will also be painted by a local muralist and should focus on themes like rain, rivers, fish, or forests — anything that celebrates the natural world and the importance of protecting local waterways from pollution.
Adults (ages 18 and older)
The adult category winner will collaborate with well-known local muralist Jon Murrill to design a large-scale exterior wall mural at the Bent Mountain Library. While the creative possibilities are broad, submissions that showcase the scenic beauty of Bent Mountain, the magic of books, or the essential role of libraries and education in the community will be given special consideration.
How to Participate
The contest is open exclusively to Roanoke County residents, and each participant may submit only one entry. Only traditional art mediums will be accepted — no AI-generated or graphic design submissions will be considered.
Entries must be submitted by August 30. Artists can drop off their completed artwork at any RCPL location or upload a scanned version online. Entry forms are available at all library branches or can be printed from home.
By participating, artists have the chance to help beautify local library spaces, raise environmental awareness, and inspire thousands of residents and visitors for years to come. The winning murals will not only showcase the creativity of Roanoke County residents but also serve as a testament to the power of community art to connect people, celebrate local culture, and promote shared values.
This is an opportunity for everyone — from crayon-loving kids to experienced adult artists — to leave a colorful and meaningful legacy on the walls and walkways of the community.
