Federal jury finds Springfield resident guilty of multiple mail theft charges

Springfield, Virginia – A federal jury found Springfield resident Kenshaun Thompson, 26, guilty of possessing and receiving stolen mail, a crime uncovered through thorough investigation and presented in court records. The conviction brings attention to the continuous efforts by U.S. law enforcement to clamp down on mail theft, a rising concern in urban communities.

Thompson was implicated in a conspiracy with Adam Bekele, 33, of Annandale, who previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail theft. Bekele admitted to accessing mailboxes unlawfully, including one at the West Springfield Post Office on Rolling Road, and transporting stolen mail to an apartment in Falls Church. Here, he handed over the stolen items to Thompson on multiple instances during October 2023, particularly on the 24th, 25th, and 26th. Thompson was aware that the mail was stolen when he received it, making his charges more severe.

The evidence at the trial clearly showed Thompson’s knowing participation in the crimes, leading to his conviction on three counts of receiving stolen mail. Each count carries a potential maximum sentence of five years, cumulating to a possible 15 years in prison. However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less severe than the maximum penalties, and the final decision will rest with a federal district judge during sentencing on December 5.

Bekele awaits his sentencing on October 3, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The swift legal actions reflect the seriousness with which federal authorities are addressing the issue of mail theft.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alessandra Serano and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Antara Saikat Joardar, with additional support from Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Hiller. The announcement came from Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Damon E. Wood, Inspector in Charge of the Washington Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
