Trump reelection could lead to unprecedented event, ex-AG says; second impeachment scenario most likely to take place
In a recent interview, Eric Holder, the former Attorney General, declared that a potential conviction of Donald Trump, if he secures a second presidential term in 2024, would instigate an impeachment process, ultimately resulting in his expulsion from office.
During a segment of MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” the show’s host, Jen Psaki, pointed out to Holder that despite facing his second indictment in as many months, Trump remains undeterred in his 2024 presidential campaign.
Holder shared his perspective on this peculiar situation: “Well, the notion that you could have a trial, defend it, be convicted, somehow win the election, be sworn in as a president, or whenever it happens, that seems inconsistent with our notion of fairness, of the rule of law. At that point, I would hope that an impeachment proceeding might be considered. Not only considered, brought. And, ultimately, he would be moved from office.”
Expressing his incredulity, Holder further added, “The prospect of a convicted felon serving as the President of the United States is simply preposterous.”
When probed about the necessity of congressional impeachment proceedings in the event of a Trump conviction, Holder agreed, stating that the implications of the recent indictment have been undervalued. He also drew attention to Trump’s indictment in a Manhattan court in April and the ongoing inquiries he is currently facing in Georgia and Washington, D.C.
Holder commented, “I’m not a political pundit, but I think at some point, you certainly won’t get beyond, you know, the Trump cult base, but for people who are on the fringes of that, the outside of that, are likely to have been negatively impacted by all of these cases brought against the former president. I think that that will have some electoral effect. And so, the likelihood that he’ll be able to survive this and win a general election, I think, is pretty small.”
Despite this, at the North Carolina GOP convention, Trump affirmed his commitment to his 2024 presidential campaign, stating, “I will never yield. I will never be deterred.”
The former president, who announced his 2024 presidential campaign last November, was indicted on 37 counts on Friday for his alleged mismanagement of classified material and attempts to hinder the federal government from recovering them, according to the recently unsealed indictment.
