On the 3rd of June, the highly acclaimed culinary delight announced a transition in its nomenclature to “Rocky Mount Smokehouse.” This decision was prompted by a trademark dispute initiated by “Buddy’s B-B-Q,” a prominent corporation-based franchise operating out of Tennessee.
In response to this legal challenge, the owner and founder of the restaurant, Allen “Buddy” Hancock, rose to the occasion.
“Undeniably, altering our name poses an intricate task, yet we’ve always been bolstered by the fervent support of our local patrons,” Hancock shared. “From our very inception, our clientele has grown into something far more personal than mere consumers – they have evolved into our friends and family. Their unwavering support is our lifeblood, which led us to the decision to involve them intimately in the selection of our new moniker.”
In a bid to involve the community, the restaurant held a poll between May 23 and June 2, proposing several name options for the patrons to choose from. These included “Rocky Mount Smokehouse,” “Pigg River BBQ,” “Blackwater BBQ,” “Get Sauced,” “Moonshiner’s BBQ,” “Crooked Road BBQ,” and “Back Porch BBQ.”
The restaurant encouraged active participation by distributing ballots throughout the local area and implementing a digital poll on various social media platforms. After an intensive period of community voting that spanned more than 10 days, the clear winner emerged as “Rocky Mount Smokehouse.”
Hancock initially opened his doors to the public in 2017 and relocated to the current Rocky Mount site in July 2021. With its unique blend of North Carolina-style barbeque infused with a hint of Franklin County moonshine, the restaurant has become a staple in the local dining scene. Complementing its exclusive homemade sauces, the freshly rebranded “Rocky Mount Smokehouse” also operates a mobile food truck.
