Roanoke City Council rejects proposed coffee shop in Fishburn Park

Roanoke, Virginia – In a decisive 6 to 1 vote, the Roanoke City Council has decided not to proceed with a proposal for a new coffee shop in the vicinity of Fishburn Park. The sole council member advocating for the project was Vice-Mayor Joe Cobb.

Public opinion at the council meeting was divided on the issue. Detractors raised concerns over potential increases in traffic, environmental implications, and heightened safety risks that the proposed coffee shop might pose.

Conversely, proponents of the project lauded its benefits, particularly during colder months when park-goers, including children, would appreciate the availability of warm beverages such as hot chocolate. Additionally, supporters pointed out the historical value of the ‘Old Caretakers Cottage’ where the coffee shop would be housed. They stressed that the proponents of the project were keen on preserving the third oldest building in Roanoke.

A resident who supported the proposed rezoning suggested that this would be a wonderful chance to both preserve a historical structure and introduce a new asset to the neighborhood. They acknowledged the slight loss of green space but emphasized the benefits of a restored building, a new business venture, and the potential for increased tax revenue.

On the other hand, opponents argued in favor of maintaining the park in its current state, expressing disapproval over the idea of a commercial venture in their residential locale. They worried that an increase in traffic and congestion could negatively impact property values in the area.

Vice Mayor Cobb expressed his appreciation for the differing views and underscored the value in expanding the use of parks for community resources. Councilmember Priddy offered a note of caution, suggesting that rezoning now might open the door to further changes down the line, and that the nature of the coffee shop could be quite different in five years.

The council did not elaborate on future plans for the ‘Old Caretakers Cottage’ following the vote.
