Blue Ridge Marathon cancelled due to severe weather
Roanoke, Virginia – The Blue Ridge Marathon, a highly anticipated and celebrated event, has been brought to an abrupt and unexpected end due to severe weather in the area.
As a result of the heavy lightning, emergency services were forced to cancel the remaining races on Saturday, effectively halting the proceedings.
Officials in charge of the marathon have requested that all runners, volunteers, staff, and audience members immediately vacate the course and Elmwood Park, for their own safety.
Marathon organizers have explained that due to the volatile weather conditions, the course has been shut down and will not be re-opened for the foreseeable future. They have also urged runners and volunteers to seek shelter at the nearest safe location or aid station, and have arranged shuttle buses to facilitate transportation.
It is important to note, however, that runners who choose to continue at their own risk will not have the assistance of volunteers, police, or medical staff, as the race has been officially canceled.
In a heartfelt statement, the race officials expressed deep regret over having to make this announcement, but cited the safety of the athletes as the main priority.
They stressed that the decision was not made lightly, and the organizers were compelled to act to avoid any potential harm to the runners. While the bag drop will remain open, the race will not be restarted, and runners are urged to make their way to safety as soon as possible.
We will continue to update our readers with any new information as it becomes available.
