VDOT seeks public input on U.S. 29 corridor study in Charlottesville and Albemarle County

Charlottesville, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is inviting residents, commuters, and other stakeholders to participate in a transportation study focused on the U.S. 29 Business (Emmet Street) and U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) corridor between Route 654 (Barracks Road) and Woodbrook Drive. The study also includes the busy interchange where U.S. 29 Business intersects with the U.S. 29/U.S. 250 Bypass, a critical link for both local and regional travel.

As part of VDOT’s Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, the study aims to examine existing conditions along the corridor and evaluate ways to improve safety, traffic operations, public transit, and multimodal access for pedestrians and cyclists. The initiative is a joint effort involving VDOT, the City of Charlottesville, and Albemarle County.

The public is encouraged to contribute to the process by completing a short survey, which is open through May 23. Feedback from community members will help shape the direction of future recommendations. The survey can be accessed online at https://publicinput.com/us29250emmet.

The corridor under review is part of a Corridor of Statewide Significance, serving as a key north-south route. U.S. 29 connects Interstate 64 and U.S. 250 to the south with U.S. 17 and Interstate 66 to the north. It also provides direct access to important local destinations like the University of Virginia, Barracks Road Shopping Center, and the Places29 Development Area in Albemarle County.

Although this study is an important step toward long-term transportation planning, it does not allocate construction funding or establish a timeline for projects. However, its findings may guide Charlottesville and Albemarle County officials in identifying priorities and pursuing funding for future improvements.

More information can be found on the VDOT STARS study webpage. Questions should be directed to Charles Proctor, VDOT Planning Manager for the Culpeper District, at (540) 829-7558 or [email protected].
