Temporary ban on open burning issued in Roanoke County due to forecasted strong winds

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office has announced a temporary burn ban due to forecasted strong winds over the next several days. Beginning March 5, 2025, all open burning, including recreational fires, will be prohibited throughout Roanoke County. The ban will remain in effect until Friday, March 7, at 4 p.m., at which point normal burning regulations will resume.

Strict Fire Restrictions in Place

Residents are prohibited from starting any open fires while the ban is in effect. This includes campfires, bonfires, and any other outdoor burning activities. The decision was made as a precautionary measure to prevent potential wildfires and property damage during high-wind conditions.

All burn permit holders have already been notified about the restriction. Authorities urge residents to comply with the ban to prevent fire hazards during this period.

Burn Laws Still in Effect After the Ban

Once the burn ban is lifted at 4 p.m. on March 7, residents must still adhere to Virginia’s Statewide Burn Laws, which remain in effect until April 30. These laws restrict burning to the hours between 4 p.m. and midnight. Additionally, any fire larger than a standard recreational fire (2 ft. by 3 ft.) will require a burn permit.

Permits can be obtained by calling the Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office at 540-777-8732.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on fire safety regulations and exercise caution when burning once the ban is lifted. Fire safety is a community effort, and compliance with these restrictions helps protect lives and property.
