Virginia Department of Transportation announces traffic shifts and ramp closures for I-64 and I-464 interchange in Chesapeake

Chesapeake, Virginia – Starting as early as Monday, February 3, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin implementing long-term traffic shifts on I-64 east and I-464 north at the exit 291A interchange ramp in Chesapeake. These changes are part of the I-64/I-464 Interchange Exit 291A Ramp Improvements Project, an effort aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety in the area.

Traffic Shift Details and Lane Adjustments

Motorists traveling on I-64 east, including those using the Express Lane, will experience a shift toward the median between Battlefield Boulevard (exit 292) and the I-464 interchange (exit 291A). Similarly, northbound traffic on I-464 will also be redirected toward the median from the I-64 west on-ramp, with the shift extending until just before Military Highway (exit 2).

These lane changes are expected to remain in place through the summer of 2026, impacting daily commutes and travel patterns in the region.

Temporary Ramp Closure and Detour Information

To facilitate the traffic shift and ramp improvements, the ramp from I-64 east to I-464 north (exit 291A) will be temporarily closed during nighttime hours from February 10 through February 17. The closure will take place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, with a clearly marked detour route provided to assist drivers.

VDOT urges all motorists to pay close attention to posted signs in the active construction zone. Electronic message boards will display real-time closure information, and detour signs will guide drivers through the affected areas.

Stay Updated on Traffic Conditions

Due to weather and schedule dependencies, changes to the construction timeline may occur. Before traveling, drivers are encouraged to check for the latest traffic updates using VDOT’s free 511 Virginia tools or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app. The 511Virginia.org website and mobile app provide live updates on construction, traffic delays, incidents, and congestion. They also offer access to traffic cameras, weather impacts, and other road conditions.
