VDOT finalizes $4.8 million RCUT intersection project on Route 662 in Madison County
Culpeper, Virginia – Starting Thursday, October 31, drivers in Madison County will navigate a newly completed restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) intersection at Route 662 (Shelby Road) and U.S. 29 (South Seminole Trail). The project, managed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), was finished a week ahead of schedule, marking a milestone in the $4.8 million SMART SCALE initiative aimed at improving traffic safety and efficiency in the region.
How the RCUT Intersection Works
The RCUT, which differs from traditional intersections, eliminates direct left turns from the cross street, improving traffic flow and reducing risks.
In the new layout, westbound drivers on Shelby Road wishing to turn south onto U.S. 29 will first turn north on U.S. 29 and then complete a U-turn about 800 feet from the intersection. Similarly, eastbound drivers on Shelby Road intending to head north on U.S. 29 will initially turn south and complete a U-turn at the same distance.
This design is intended to minimize traffic disruptions and provide a safer option for turning onto the highway, offering a better alternative to traditional stop-controlled intersections.
Safety Benefits of the RCUT
The RCUT design has been proven effective in reducing traffic accidents and their severity. A recent study conducted by the Federal Highway Administration found that RCUT intersections reduce overall crashes by 28 to 49 percent compared to traditional stop-controlled intersections. More importantly, the design reduces fatal crash severity by 70 percent and injuries resulting from crashes by 42 percent.
VDOT officials believe the new RCUT intersection will enhance safety and provide smoother traffic movement for Madison County drivers navigating the busy Route 662 and U.S. 29 intersection.
