Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office invites community to join efforts for Thanksgiving meal program for families in need

Roanoke, Virginia – As the holiday season draws near, the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office is embracing the spirit of giving and community support by offering Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Recognizing the challenges many households face, the Sheriff’s Office aims to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy a hearty meal with loved ones during this special time of year.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Sheriff’s Office is organizing the Thanksgiving meal initiative. The program is a collaborative effort between the Sheriff’s Office and community partners, reflecting a shared commitment to compassion and togetherness. The meals will include a turkey along with all the traditional sides, ensuring that each family can experience the full warmth of the holiday season.

Applications Open for Families in Need

Beginning November 2, 2024, residents can apply online to receive a Thanksgiving meal or contact the sheriff’s office at 540-853-1761 for more details. The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who knows a family in need to spread the word about this opportunity. The meal distribution will take place on Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Berglund Center parking lot, located at 710 Williamson Rd., Roanoke, VA.

The meal packages will include frozen turkeys, vegetables, canned green beans, carrots, corn, cranberry sauce, dressing mix, canned gravy, packaged bread rolls or cornbread mix, and potatoes. Each carefully prepared package ensures recipients receive a full, traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Community Involvement and Donation Opportunities

The Sheriff’s Office also invites the community to get involved by donating food items or offering their time as volunteers. Donations of non-perishable food and other essentials can be dropped off at 340 Campbell Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016. The donation window is open from November 2 to November 16, and donations will play a vital role in ensuring all families who apply receive a meal.

Volunteers are needed on Friday, November 22, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to assist with preparing food bags, and on the distribution day, November 23, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to help relocate and hand out the meal packages.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Sheriff Hash and his team are hopeful that the community’s kindness will make this holiday season brighter for those facing tough times.

For those who wish to contribute through donations or have questions about volunteering, the Sheriff’s Office encourages contacting 540-853-1761 for more details.

The Thanksgiving meal program exemplifies how small acts of kindness can have a significant impact, bringing people together during the season of gratitude.
