VDOT urges drivers to prepare for I-66 ramp closures and traffic changes next week
Fairfax, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of nighttime ramp closures from Monday, October 21, through Friday, October 25, to complete critical construction as part of the ongoing Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The closures will take place nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and drivers are advised to follow detour signs throughout the affected areas.
These closures are part of the project’s final construction phase, aiming to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along the I-66 corridor.
List of Scheduled Ramp Closures
The following I-66 ramps will be closed during the nightly construction period:
- I-66 East to Route 28 North
- I-66 West to Route 28 North
- I-66 West to Route 28 North and Braddock Road/Walney Road
- Route 28 North to Braddock Road/Walney Road

Additionally, closures will affect the 66 Express Lanes ramps:

- 66 Express Lanes East to I-495 South
Construction Progress and Driver Recommendations
These closures are a necessary part of completing the infrastructure improvements along I-66, which include lane expansions and better access to major roads in the region. The improvements aim to ease congestion, enhance safety, and provide smoother commutes once completed.
VDOT advises drivers to follow clearly marked detours to navigate around the closures and to plan their routes ahead of time. Drivers should also remain alert to changing traffic patterns and reduced speeds in the work zones. As the work is dependent on weather and scheduling, closures may be rescheduled if necessary.
